Contact breakers act as electrical switches between ignition coil and flywheel. Collapsing currents induce high voltage in the coil for a short time, and the electrodes of the spark plug are arced, triggering the ignition spark needed for starting the engine. As mechanical parts, contact breakers are prone to wear and have to be replaced from time to time.
