THE IGNITION
The ignition or ignition system consists of the spark plug, which genetrates the ignition spark needed to ignite the fuel-air mixture, the ignition coil, which supplies the voltage necessary to produce the ignition spark, and a control unit, the so-called CDI. The air-fuel mixture in the cylinder has to be ignited to get the engine in motion. This is done, ... as the name suggests, by using an ignition system. The required spark is generated between the electrodes of the spark plug in the dome-shaped combustion chamber of the cylinder head. The energy generated by the spark increases the temperature of the mixture, causing it to ignite and burn.
IGNITION WITH FIXED OR VARIABLE IGNITION TIMING
We stock inexpensive spark plugs and spark plug caps from Motoforce and NGK for all applications. We sell our ignition coils and CDI units at fair prices and for most 50cc scooters and mopeds.
On 50cc scooters, ignition systems with fixed ignition timing are fitted as standard, i.e. the ignition spark is always generated at the same time. This type of ignition is simply connected to the original ignition cables and does not require any special adaptation.
With tuned engines, especially with very heavily tuned engines, we recommend the use of an ignition with dynamic / variable ignition timing; this means that ignition timing adapts to engine speed. This type of racing ignition consists of a holding plate plus a weight-reduced stator and inner rotor and controls the ignition behavior depending on rpms, this way the engine has a better response. The coil provides an extra strong spark up to 20.000 rpm. Tuning ignitions are also available in an analogue versions like the Italkit Selettra, that have a fixed ignition timing.
With digital ignitions such as the Stage6 internal rotor ignition, the Malossi MHR or the MVT Digital, the ignition timing is dynamic and varies according to engine speed.
But be careful - mounting and adjusting an internal rotor ignition requires a certain know-how and appropriate tools. You can find more information about ignition in our tutorials.
